Modern and Contemporary Art Conservation

Christine Haynes Mitchell, Art Conservator

I’m a professional art conservator with over a decade of experience caring for modern and contemporary artworks, including sculpture, design and technical objects, installations, and time-based media. I currently work as a conservator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and have previously held positions at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Preservation Arts in Oakland, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Collaboration is at the heart of my practice. Whether working with private collectors, artists, foundations, fabricators, or city agencies, I develop tailored preservation strategies that respect both the materials and the unique stories behind each artwork. My goal is to help you care for your collection with thoughtful and informed conservation.

I hold dual degrees in Art Conservation and Art History from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts and am a Professional Associate Member of the American Institute for Conservation.

Services and Expertise

Condition Assessments

Comprehensive conservation assessments for individual artworks and entire collections, tailored to your specific goals. I offer survey services that prioritize artworks by condition, material sensitivity, or environmental exposure. I specialize in synthesizing technical findings into concise, accessible reports that can be easily shared with stakeholders including collectors, institutions, city agencies, or insurance providers. My documentation is designed to support informed decision-making and help you plan effectively for the future of your collection.

Conservation Treatment

Conservation treatments ranging from minor repairs to complex interventions for modern and contemporary sculpture, design and technical objects, installations, and mixed media. Services include structural stabilization, surface cleaning, loss compensation, and preparation for display or transport. Whether you're installing an exhibition, loaning an artwork, or addressing condition issues, I ensure treatments are carefully documented, ethically grounded, and tailored to each object’s materials, history, and intended use.

On-Site Maintenance

On-site care for private and public collections, including documentation, surface cleaning, stabilization, and preventive maintenance. My approach prioritizes material safety and long-term preservation, with tailored care plans that fit the artwork’s environment and use. Regular maintenance helps prevent deterioration and ensures your collection remains in stable condition over time.
